Activities

Our events and projects build bridges through inclusive community participation. People of various ages from a range of cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds come together and provide the opportunity to celebrate our wonderfully diverse community in a colourful, fun and safe way. The events also offer an excellent informal opportunity for new migrants and refugees to network.

South West Multicultural Festival

The 'South West Multicultural Festival' (SWMF) in Bunbury is a free public event held annually.

It celebrates the culturally diverse communities that call the South West region ‘home’ and brings the world to Bunbury on that day!

The festival includes cultural demonstrations, interactive workshops, food, market and information stalls and an exciting evening of dance, song and music.

The popular flag parade that opens the festival is heart stirring and educational, showcasing over 40 flags from different countries proudly carried by locals born in those countries, who are encouraged to greet the audience in their mother tongue.

This is Me

The ‘This is Me’ program presents migrant stories in public spaces and cafes throughout the year.

Hosted by the Bunbury Multicultural Group in partnership with the City of Bunbury and ABC South West people are encouraged to share their stories and experiences of settling into the South West in a safe, welcoming environment.

These sessions put a face to a cultural group, and humanize what we have previously only heard in the media.

This is Me helps to dispel myths by reducing a ‘fear of the unknown’, builds knowledge, awareness, harmony and acceptance in the greater Bunbury community.

Driving to Make a Difference

The ‘Driving to make a Difference’ project is initiated by the Bunbury Multicultural Group and delivered in partnership with the Multicultural Services Centre WA with funding from Office Multicultural Intersts. Past sponsors have included the Zonta Club of Bunbury, Soroptimist International of Bunbury and SIMCOA. It gives culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women the opportunity to have their driving lessons and their driving assessment paid for.

Migrant women, especially in regional and rural communities, can easily become marginalised and isolated from engaging with the wider community due to a lack of good public transport and being unable to drive themselves. This isolation makes it difficult for them to access services that can benefit them. We believe that this project develops the status of women, builds capacity and helps them become more confident and able to access community events and networks and integrate into community easier.

Dine With Me

Our ‘Dine with Me’ events give community members the opportunity to engage and make new friends by sharing a plate – a typical dish from their home country – while sharing their stories.
